We have crossed the halfway point in our practical recipe for remarkable focus in the family. You know where you want to go (the Future Picture has been painted), and you have decided where to apply the greatest amount of energy right now (the Game-changer Goals). The symphony has been conceived. The opening sonata is the priority. The third step is the factor that will enable the priority to be accomplished. This is the writing of the notes. You can rest assured that if you follow this process, measure-by-measure, you will complete the piece.
Whereas the Game-changer Goal (GG) is mid-term, the Drivers are short-term success indicators that provide confidence and visibility on how you are tracking towards it. To identify them, ask this question. What are one or two things that we can do and watch weekly that will have the most impact on achieving your GG? These are success indicators that if done every week will almost guarantee success in reaching your mid-term goal.
For example, if part of your future picture for your family was for each member to have a firm grasp on your Christian doctrine, a GG might be to have your family memorize the Westminster Shorter Catechism and study through the proof texts. You might set an annual goal to go memorize the first 52 questions and read through the associated proof texts. One Driver could be to review and practice one question each night at dinner. Another Driver could be to study the proof texts each day during family worship. If each of these were accomplished then it would be almost certain that the GG would be reached. If the GG were to be reached, then you made the most progress possible toward your Future Picture.
Before we move to the next step, there is one more critical component to the Driver. Driver completion and progress against your Game-changer goal must be visible to your whole family. Whether it is over the dinner table, on the refrigerator, or on the front door as you leave the house – it must be constantly staring every member of your family in the face. This is the only effective defense against the myriad of activities competing for your attention and threatening to steal your focus.
Still, after you paint your Future Picture, set a Game-changer Goal and establish meaningful, visible Drivers – you still have one ultra-critical step to ensure success. This final piece will be explored tomorrow.
