It is inevitable. When you talk enough about God’s law or covenant responsibilities, you will no doubt be accused of legalism or somehow lacking a measure of grace. “Law vs. grace” may very well deserve the blue ribbon for being one of the foremost false-dichotomies of the Christian faith.
Perhaps the reason behind this is found in our sinful nature. If we can polarize the two concepts, then we can flee to one or the other as it suits our given situation. It becomes very practical. When a law or obligation feels uncomfortable I can run over to grace. When I am talking about how that other guy should conduct his affairs – well then, I can run over to law for a bit.
But this is not God’s economy. God’s grace and his laws go hand in hand. They are two sides of the same coin. Don’t miss Episode 5 in the Covenant Cartoon series.
